What is Tu Bishvat 
and when do we celebrate it? 

Tu Bishvat is the Jewish New Year of the trees, and we celebrate it at the time that most trees in Israel begin to bud. This is the time of year when the winter has just ended and spring is coming. 

The Cabbalists of Safed encourage us to open ourselves to mystery, wonder, creativity and celebration; this is an oral wisdom, something learned from others, rather than from books. They tell us to eat a lot of fruits on this day and make a lot of blessings in order to rectify the reality created after Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit.

The spreading in many parts of the Jewish world of drums, yoga and meditation is part of this phenomenon. The peaceful and the joyous in Jewish life are being rediscovered.

Tu Bishvat is a moment to celebrate new life and new beginnings, physical and cultural.

Why did the trees get a New Year of their own?

The trees saw that G-d made a New Year for mankind and said: It is written in the Torah “The man is like a tree…” Therefore we also have to have a New Year of our own.”

They were asked ”What month?“

The trees answered: “Trees need water, therefore it’s better to have it in the month of Shvat”- there is also a Mitzva of planting in that month.

פרשת בֹא

בפרשת בא מוזכרת is mentioned מצוות תפילין בפסוק:

והיה לאות על-ידכה, ולטוטפת בין עיניך:  כי בחזק יד, הוציאנו יהוה ממצרים.  (י”ג, ט”ז)

And it shall be for a sign upon thy hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes; for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt

המילה טוטפת היא מילה מיוחדת unique. הרבה פרשנים commentators  ניסו להסביר אותה.

התלמוד אומר שהמילה הזאת מורכבת is combined משתי מילים: “טט” ו”פת”.

פירוש המילה “טט” בשפה הכתפית – שתיים.

פירוש המילה “פת” – בשפה האפריקאית – שתים.

שתיים ועוד שתיים שווה  equals ארבע. זה רמז hint לארבע פרשיות מהתורה שיש בתפילין.

“קדש לי כל בכור…” (שמות:י”ג, א’ – י)

“והיה כי יביאך…”    שמות: י”ג, י”א – ט”ז)

“שמע ישראל…”       (דברים: ו’ , ד’-ט’)

“והיה אם שמוע …”  (דברים: י”א, י”ג-כ”א)

יש מחלוקת dispute לגבי סדר הפרשיות order of portions בתפילין בין רש”י לנכד grandson שלו, יעקב בן מאיר  - רבנו תם.

רש”י אומר שפרשית “שמע” צריכה להיות לפני before פרשית “והיה אם שמוע”

רבנו תם אומר שפרשית “שמע” צריכה להיות אחרי after פרשית “והיה אם שמוע”

מספרים שכפעם אחת רש”י היה כותב פרשיות של תפילין הוא החזיק held בידיו את הנכד שלו יעקב שהיה אז תינוק קטן.

פתאום התינוק דחף pushed את היד של רש”י והדיו ink נשפכה spilled על הקלף.

הסתכל רש”י על הנכד ואמר: בעתיד תהיה מחלוקת ביני לבין הנכד הזה בעניין פרשיות תפילין.

בפרשת שמות התורה מספרת איך משה ואהרן דורשים demand מפרעה להוציא to take out את בני ישראל ממצרים.

 

 

שאלו פעם את אחד ממייסדי founders הציונות הדתית
religious Zionist movement , רבי שמואל מוהךיבר: למה היה צורך בשני שליחים messengers משה ואהרן כדי להוציא   את בני ישראל ממצרים.   למה לא היה די enough בשליח אחד?

 

 

ענה הרב מוהליבר: גם בגאולה העתידית future redemption יהיו שני משיחים – משיח בן יוסף ומשיח בן דויד.

 

אמרו לו: השאלה ששאלנו טובה גם ביחס in relation to לגאולה העתידה לבוא. למה צריכים שני משיחים?

 

הרב מוהליבר חשב קצת ואז ענה: אני חושב שבאמת אנחנו צריכים שני משיחים. אחד – בשביל להוציא את עם ישראל מן הגלות,

והשני -  בשביל להוציא את הגלות מעם ישראל…

פרשת שמות

And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the river and her maidens walked along by the river-side and she saw the ark among the flags, and sent her handmaid to fetch it.

בעברית למילה אמה יש כמה מובנים:

1. שפחה
2. זרוע
3. מידה של אורך

הפרשן רש”י משתמש במובן השני ואומר שבת פרעה הושיטה את ידה ואז קרה נס:

האמה=הזרוע של בת פרעה התארכה כמה אמות  עד שהצליחה להוציא את משה מן המים.

In the Torah portion Shemot, the Torah tells how the daughter of Pharaoh saved Moshe.

And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the river and her maidens walked along by the river-side and she saw the ark among the flags, and sent her handmaid to fetch it (2,5).

The Hebrew word “AMAH” handmaid –אמה  has several meanings:

1. Maid
2. Arm
3. A unit of length – cubit

Rashi uses the second meaning and says that the daughter of Pharaoh actually reached out her arm and then a miracle occurred: her arm became longer by several cubits and she was able to pull out Moshe from the water.

Rabbi Yitzhak from Worka asks: Moshe was far away from the daughter of Pharaoh and she did not know in advance that a miracle would occur. Why then, did she try to reach out for Moshe?

And he answers: From the deed of the daughter of Pharaoh we must learn a very important thing. When someone is crying for help, we should not stay motionless and think whether we will succeed or not.

One must immediately reach out immediately to help wholeheartedly and G-d then will assist him in a miraculous way – above the nature.

בפרשת וישב יש פסוק:

אחרי הפגישה הזאת יש פסוק:

וישב יעקב, בארץ מגורי אביו–בארץ, כנען. (לז:א)

רבי שניאור זלמן מלאדי אומר: בפסוק הזה יש ביטוי מיוחד “מגורי אביו“.

התורה משתמשת בביטוי “מגורי אביו” כי למילה “מגורים” שבנויה משורש “גר” יש שלוש משמעויות:

1. ”לגור” – להתגורר, להיות במקום דירה ומושב

2. “לגור” – לפחד

3. “גר” – להיות זר במקום

מאז שבני ישראל נמצאים בגלות, הארצות של העמים השונים הן מקום דירה ומגורים לבני ישראל.

אבל, המקומות האלה הם לא בטוחים לבני ישראל ויש להם שם פחד והם גם מרגישים זרים במקומות האלה.

רק במקום אחד בני ישראל מרגישים ממש בבית בלי הרגשה של פחד וזרות – בארץ האבות, ארץ ישראל.

In Torah portion VaYeshev there is a verse:

And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father’s sojournings, in the land of Canaan. (37: 1)
Rabbi Shneor Zalman from Ladi says: in this verse there is a special expression “Megurey Aviv” – “father’s sojournings”. The Torah uses this expression, because the root “GAR“  of the word “Megurey”  has three meanings:

1. To dwell
2. To have fear, to be afraid
3. To be a stranger

Since the people of Israel have been in Diaspora, they have lived in the land of other peoples.

But these places are not safe for the people of Israel and they have fear there. They also feel as strangers there.

There is only one place where people of Israel feel really at home, without having fear and without feeling as strangers – the land of their fathers – the Land of Israel.

בפרשת וישלח התורה מספרת על הפגישה בין יעקב לאחיו עשו.

אחרי הפגישה הזאת יש פסוק:

ויבא יעקב שלם עיר שכם, אשר בארץ כנען, בבאו, מפדן ארם; ויחן, את-פני העיר. (לג:יח)

יש כמה פירושים למילה שלם.

רשי אומר:

1. שלם בגופו – יעקב התרפא מהצליעה אחרי המאבק עם המלאך.

2. שלם בממון – אחרי שיעקב נתן הרבה מתנות לאחיו עשיו, לא היה חסר לא כלום

3. שלם בתורתו – יעקב לא שכח את הדברים  אחרי 20 שנים שהיה בבית לבן

החתם סופר אומר:

“שלם” – זה ראשי תיבות: שם, לשון, מלבוש

גם כשהוא היה כל כך הרבה זמן מחוץ לבית במדינה של עובדי אלילים, יעקב לא הושפע מהסביבה ושמר כל הזמן על 3 דברים מיוחדים למשפחה שלו וכך גם בסופו של דבר לעם ישראל:

1. שם – השמות המיוחדים של הילדים

2. לשון –לשון הקודש העברית

3. מלבוש – יעקב ומשפחתו התלבשו באופן צנוע ושונה ממה שהיה בסביבה של לבן.

חז”ל אמרו גם שבזכות השמירה הזאת על שלושה דברים, בני ישראל גם נגאלו ממצרים.

In Torah portion VaYishlach the Torah tells about the meeting between Jacob and his brother Esau.

Following that meeting there is a verse:

And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram; and encamped before the city.
(33: 18)

The word “Shalem”, used in this verse has several meanings in Hebrew:

whole, entire, complete, unharmed, full, safe, unabridged

There are several explanations to the expression ” SHALEM – in peace” in this context.

Rashi explains:

1. Unharmed with his body – after the fight with the angel
2. Full with money, even after giving many presents to his brother Esau
3. Unabridged with his studies, Jacob did not forget his learning after 20 years of being at Lavan’s

The Chatam Sofer says:

SHaLeM – can be interpreted as an acronym

SH – Shem (name)

L – Lashon (tongue, language)

M – Malbush (clothing)

Even after staying in an idol worshipping environment for 20 years, Jacob still kept three special things related to his family.

1. Name – Jacob kept special names for his children
2. Language – Jacob kept using the Holy language (Hebrew)
3. Clothing – Jacob and his family wore modest clothes, different from those in the land of Lavan

Our sages also stated that due to the fact that People of Israel kept these 3 things in Egypt, they were eventually redeemed.
