When the Sea Splits… and History Changes Direction

There are Torah portions you learn — and then there are Torah portions you enter.

Parashat B’shalach is the latter.

 

This is the Shabbat of קריעת ים סוף – Kriyat Yam Suf, the Splitting of the Sea.
Not only a miracle of water, but a revolution of consciousness.

 

Up until this moment, the Israelites are physically free —
but not yet internally free.

 

The sea does what no speech, plague, or prophecy could fully do:
It forces a decision.

“And the sea saw… and fled”

 

וַיָּבֹאוּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּתוֹךְ הַיָּם בַּיַּבָּשָׁה

 

 

“And the children of Israel came into the sea on dry land.”
(Exodus 14:22)

 

Our Sages note something subtle and powerful:
The verse does not say the sea split and then they entered.
They entered first. (before the sea split) 

 

Only after Nachshon ben Aminadav stepped forward — into uncertainty — did the waters respond.
 

 

Faith here is not belief – Faith is motion.
 

The Midrash That Changes Everything: Pharaoh Who Survived

 

Here comes one of the most surprising midrashim.

According to Pirkei deRabbi Eliezer and other Midrashic sources:

👉 Pharaoh did not die in the sea.

He was saved.

Why?

 

Because at the very last moment, as the waters closed in, Pharaoh cried out:

 

“מִי כָמוֹךָ בָּאֵלִם ה׳”

 

 

“Who is like You among the mighty, Hashem?”

 

  • A fleeting moment of truth.
  • A crack in arrogance.
  • And Heaven responded.

 

What happened next?

Pharaoh was later destined to become the king of Nineveh.

Yes — that Nineveh.

 

The same city that would one day hear the voice of Yonah (Jonah).
The same city that would repent en masse.
The same city spared from destruction.

 

📌 Why Nineveh repented?
 
Because its king already knew:

What it means to stand before unstoppable truth
What it means when the waters rise
What it means when arrogance collapses

He had been there before.

 

 

The sea didn’t just split Israel’s past — it prepared the future of the world.
 

Shirat HaYam – The Birth of Jewish Voice

 

Only after the sea, something unprecedented happens:

 

אָז יָשִׁיר מֹשֶׁה

 

 

“Then Moses sang…” (Exodus 15:1)

 

This is not poetry.
This is identity.

 

Until now, God spoke to Israel.
Here — Israel speaks back.

 

The Song of the Sea is the moment when a nation discovers its voice.
  • Not complaint.
  • Not fear.
  • Song.

 

And Miriam leads the women — with drums prepared before the miracle.
Because redemption was already packed in their bags.
 

Special Segulot of Shabbat B’shalach

 

This Shabbat carries unique spiritual channels, cherished across generations:

 

✨ Parnassah (Livelihood):
Reading Shirat HaYam with intention is considered a powerful segulah for flow, sustenance, and removing financial blockages.

 

✨ Emunah (Trust):
B’shalach strengthens the ability to walk forward even when the path is not yet visible.

 

✨ Breaking Inner Egypts:
Habits, fears, self-definitions that “chase us” — this Shabbat is a time to let them drown.

 

✨ Healing Through Song:
Singing — even quietly — opens gates that words cannot.

 

 

A Chassidic Story – Why the Sea Had to Split

 

A teaching attributed to the Baal Shem Tov:

 

Before the sea split, the angels asked:
“Why should Israel be saved?
These worship idols, and those worship idols.”
 

God answered:

 

“This one is running toward Me, and this one is running back to Egypt.”
 

 

The miracle was not about merit.
It was about direction.

 

The Chassidim explain:
The sea represents habit — the natural order, the predictable flow of life.
It splits only when a human being dares to move against momentum.

 

Not because they are perfect.
But because they are turning.

 

👉 Redemption begins not when you are worthy — but when you are oriented correctly.
 

The Psychology of Erich Fromm

 

In Escape from Freedom, Fromm explains why people fear liberation:
Freedom requires responsibility.
Slavery offers certainty.

 

Egypt was brutal — but familiar.
The sea was terrifying — but open.

 

B’shalach is the moment humanity learns:

 

 

Security is not the same as safety.
 

Martin Buber

Buber’s I and Thou reminds us that true transformation happens in encounter.

At the sea, Israel encounters:

Nature Fear God Themselves

And out of that encounter comes song — not law, not structure, but relationship.

 

 

 

 Words Born at the Sea

 

 

🌊 ים – Yam (Sea)

 

Root meaning: chaos, motion, instability
Modern Hebrew:

ים של בעיות — “a sea of problems” ים של זמן — “tons of time”

👉 The sea symbolizes overwhelm — not danger, but excess.

 

✂️ קריעה – Kri’ah (Tearing / Splitting)

Same root as:

לקרוע — to tear קרע פנימי — inner rupture

 

The miracle was not gentle.
Growth sometimes requires rupture.
 

🚶 לעבור – La’avor (To cross)

From the same root:

עברי — Hebrew מעבר — transition

 

A Hebrew is not someone from a place —
but someone in transition.
 

🎶 שירה – Shira (Song)

 

Unlike שיר (a song),

 

 

שירה implies:

elevation collective voice permanence

 

That’s why Shirat HaYam is written in a special layout in the Torah — brick upon brick — like a bridge.
 
 
 

Bringing It All Together

Pharaoh survives to teach Nineveh that arrogance can kneel.
Israel sings to learn that freedom has a voice.
The sea splits to teach that reality follows courage.
And Shabbat B’shalach whispers:

 

You don’t need clarity to move.
You need direction.

 

 

A Question to Carry Into Shabbat

 

Where in my life am I still standing at the shore —
waiting for certainty — instead of taking the first step?

 

Because in B’shalach, we learn:

 

 

The sea doesn’t open for observers.
It opens for walkers.

 

  • Shabbat Shira.
  • Shabbat of courage.
  • Shabbat of voice.

 

May we merit to step forward —
and let the waters know when it’s time to move. 🌊✨
